Things to do in Nanaimo in July
July is a fantastic month in Nanaimo. It is a time to get out on the water. Many of the things to do in Nanaimo this month revolve around the water. For example there is the Save-on-Foods Dragon Boat Festival, The Silly Boat Regatta - Sunday July 17th, The Nanaimo Marine Festival-July 21-24 and of course the world famous Bathtub Race on July 24th.
Silly Boat Regatta-
Now here is a fun thing to do in Nanaimo - The Silly Boat Regatta. Last year 45 teams put together a silly boat and raced. The boats are quite imaginative and are crafted by using such tools as duct tape and anything that may float. The teams are given four hours to build their boat and hopefully get it sea worthy. Lots of laughter at this race. The boats race 150-200 metres depending on the wind.
The race takes place Sunday July 17th at Maffeo Sutton Park. Boat building begins at 8:00 am and activities and games begin at 10:00 with the race starting at 1:00. All proceeds are given to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre.
Nanaimo Marine Festival - July 21-24
The four day festival begins on Thursday July 21 at Maffeo Sutton Park with a kid's carnival, entertainment and a beer garden. On Saturday July 23, the Sail Past on Wheels parade will sail through the downtown core, starting at 10:30. Saturday evening the sky will be alight with the biggest fireworks display on Vancouver Island
The Bathtub Race - Sunday July 24
Nanaimo is known as the bathtubbing capital of the World. Entrants to the race come from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the U.S.
At 11:00 am on Sunday the bathtubbers will race out of Nanaimo Harbour, head to Schooner Cove in Nanoose and circle the Winchelsea Islands. The race ends back at Departure Bay Beach where the racers park their bath tubs and race up the beach and ring a bell. The best vantage point to watch the racers is on Departure Bay beach or on the beach at Stephenson Point.
These are just a few of the things to do in Nanaimo this July. You may also want to refer to the Tourism Nanaimo website for additional Nanaimo activities.
