Five Signs That It's Time To Downsize Your Home

We've all heard the phrase 'bigger is better', especially when it comes to buying your home in Nanaimo.

But sometimes 'smaller can be better' and that means having to downsize your house.

Here are 5 signs to look for that tell you it's time to downsize your home:

1.  The travel bug is biting

Do you find yourself more and more leafing through beautiful, four-color travel guides that transport you to far away places?  Places you'd rather be instead of house cleaning or taking care of that big backyard?  Then maybe it's time to consider downsize
trading down for a low-maintenance, easy-to-care-for condo or townhome.

2.  You're getting lost in your own home

If it's becoming more and more difficult to find your spouse in your house, if you end up using the intercom system because you're tired of shouting, these could be signs that you've got too much house.

3.  You can think of better things to do with your money

Owning a bigger house than you need means higher utility bills, higher maintenance costs and higher landscaping costs.  Even if you're not financially stressed, you may still find yourself thinking that there must be better things to do with your money than pay that high heating bill every winter.

4.  Your spare bedrooms are used as storage rooms

Too much stuff for too much space?  If those extra bedrooms, your den or your entertainment room have slowly but surely turned into fancy storage space, that's a certain sign that you've got too much house . . . and that a garage and moving sale are in order.

5.  You begin thinking ahead of the curve

As more and more baby boomers reach retirement age, they're going to begin selling their big homes for something smaller.  Many real estate experts question whether or not the next generation of buyers are going to be willing or able to buy all of those big homes on the market.  If they're right, now might be the time to start thinking about downsizing rather than waiting for everybody else to do it.
