This is the first in a series of posts that will assist first time home buyers prepare themselves for the experience of purchasing a home.

As a first time home buyer you may find the process of buying your first home complex and often frustrating... but it's also an exciting and exhilarating experience.   I have never worked with anyone who regrets the decision they made to buy their first home.

It is always a good idea to do some research in advance of making a large purchase like a home.  Therefore it makes sense to have a basic understanding of the process before going in.  It's my intention to assist you in learning the steps of becoming a first time home buyer.

Step One
Choosing a Realtor

Once you're serious about becoming a first time home buyer, find a real estate agent.  Visiting open houses is an excellent way to determine what you like or don't like in a home.  However, it is not an efficient way to purchase a home.  By working with a real estate agent you will have access to nearly all the homes for sale.  Your REALTOR can sort through all the data to find what you're looking for.

How do you find the right real estate agent to work with?

It's a good idea to ask around - referrals from friends are a great way to find an agent; probably one of the best. You can also meet agents at open houses.  Ask them if they have experience working with first time home buyers.  It's important to click with your agent as you will be spending a lot of time together.   Make sure that the agent you choose is enthusiastic about working with you, and should be familiar with the neighborhoods that you are interested in.

How does a Real estate agent get paid?

In most cases REALTOR services are FREE to buyers.  Our fee is paid by the listing agent for helping sell the home.  It makes a lot of sense to use the services of a REALTOR as you navigate your way through the process of becoming a first time home buyer.
